KERR STRUGGLING TO OVERCOME STING

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008 at 7:36 am

BY STEPHEN BAKER

WEST Coast’s Daniel Kerr remains troubled by the after effects of a stingray attack at Port Melbourne beach last Saturday.

The Eagles star, while sore, is expected to be available for their round 15 clash against an enigmatic Richmond.

“I’m healthy in the sense that the mind and body’s healthy, I’m just a little bit sore in the ankle where the stingray has actually stung me,” he said.

“It’s not just sore where it stung me, there is a lot of swelling around the area.”

Kerr is the second player to come off second best after coming into contact with a stingray at Port Melbourne beach.

Earlier this season, Bulldog draftee Jarrad Grant was stung as he was completing a recovery session.

Round 14 Injury Update

Thursday, June 26th, 2008 at 3:14 pm

BY FRANK IENCO

ST. Kilda is expected to be without the services of midfielder Lenny Hayes for Saturday night’s match against North Melbourne on the Gold Coast.

Team-mate Sam Gilbert confirmed Hayes has a hamstring injury, but should be available for selection after the split round break.

Justin Koschitzke is chance of facing the ‘Roos as he looks to overcome a knee injury.

Meanwhile, West Coast’s chances of beating Hawthorn tomorrow night at the MCG have grown even slimmer with three players expected to miss the match.

After only returning three weeks ago, midfielder Sam Butler has again succumbed to a chronic groin injury.

However, coach John Worsfold remains confident Butler will be available to play after the break.

Brett Jones will also miss the Hawks clash with an ankle injury as will David Wirrpanda with a back problem.

Midfield Duo Out For Eagles

Thursday, June 12th, 2008 at 3:19 pm

BY FRANK IENCO

West Coast have been dealt a double blow ahead of tomorrow night’s match against Essendon, with Chad Fletcher and Michael Braun both remaining in Perth due to injury.

The news follows the withdrawals of forwards Ben McKinley and Ashley Hansen, adding further pressure to an already dwindling midfield and forward stocks ahead of the Telstra Dome clash.

Speaking at the Eagles training session today at Junction Oval, Eagles assistant coach Peter Sumich confirmed Fletcher has a back problem, while Braun has a sore knee.

“Chad Fletcher’s form has been great and Michael Braun’s has picked up over the last couple of weeks,” Sumich said. “Body wise if they were 100 percent to go, they would be here but their bodies are just a little bit off.”

Sumich says the pair should be fit to face Geelong at Subiaco Oval on Saturday week.

SELWOOD FREE TO PLAY

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008 at 7:49 pm

BY BRAD KLIBANSKY

WEST Coast midfielder Adam Selwood is free to play against Essendon on Friday night, despite being found guilty by the AFL Tribunal of striking Sydney’s Amon Buchanan.

Selwood was offered a reprimand for the offence by the match review panel but chose to contest the charge knowing that his good record would save him from a suspension even if he was found guilty.

Although free to play, Selwood said he was disappointed in losing his good behaviour record.

“I’m disappointed obviously in the decision and disappointed in losing my good behaviour record but we’ll just move on and so be it,” Selwood said after the hearing.

DOUBLE BLOW FOR EAGLES

Thursday, June 5th, 2008 at 3:16 pm

BY BRAD KLIBANSKY

THE West Coast Eagles season has gone from bad to worse, with two key players suffering major injuries.

Midfielder Matt Rosa will miss the next six to eight weeks with a broken ankle, whilst forward Josh Kennedy will be sidelined for three to four weeks with a knee injury.

Rosa’s injury could open the door for injury-plagued midfielder Sam Butler’s return to the senior side.

Butler last played for the Eagles in their 2006 grand final triumph over Sydney but has been plagued by a succession of groin injuries ever since.

Forward Ashley Hansen and ruckman Mark Seaby are others pushing hard for a recall.

The Eagles play the Sydney Swans at Subiaco on Saturday.

Kerr Happy to Remain An Eagle

Thursday, May 29th, 2008 at 12:39 pm

BY FRANK IENCO

West Coast’s midfield star Daniel Kerr says he wants to re-sign a new deal with Eagles, quashing speculation he was keen on a return to Melbourne.

Kerr, whose current contract at the club expires at the end of next season, says he is not sure where the rumours have started from.

“I’m definitely not the one starting them, either is my manager. I’m happy at the Eagles and it’s strange it’s come up again really,” Kerr said.

“I’m more than happy to stay in Western Australia. I’m happy to be with the Eagles,” he said. “I’ve got a lovely girlfriend, my family’s here, why would I move?”

In news that would delight Eagles fans followng the departures of Chris Judd and Ben Cousins at the end of last season, Kerr says he would jump at the chance to sign a long-term deal to stay if the club offered him one.

“I don’t think there’s any player in the AFL who’s happy at a club that wouldn’t like a long-term deal.”

Eagles Embrace New Interchange Rules

Thursday, May 29th, 2008 at 11:37 am

BY FRANK IENCO

The West Coast Eagles have been one of the first clubs to approve modifications to the AFL’s controversial interchange laws, saying the changes will make it easier for everyone.

As we reported yesterday, the league will use information from Champion Data to monitor interchanges and clubs will no longer have to log changes in writing.

The Eagles were one the sides adversely affected by the previous system, after they were contentiously penalised for an interchange infringement in last Saturday’s win over Adelaide, prompting the new changes.

West Coast football operations manager Steve Woodhouse says the changes have meade the interchange rule more simple.

“We were perhaps always a little bit concerned that sometimes people get a bit jumpy and want to police things rather heavily,” Woodhouse told the ABC.

“If you break the rule, you break the rule,” he said. ”But the situation is that it’s new for everyone, it’s very different and we just need to make sure we don’t make a mess of it.”

EAGLES COMMIT TO DISCIPLINE

Friday, May 16th, 2008 at 3:37 pm

BY STEPHEN BAKER

WEST Coast Eagles ruckman, Dean Cox has said that his team will be more concerned with getting a win than worrying about crowd sizes on Saturday night when they take on North Melbourne on the Gold Coast.

Cox said that he and his teammates were determined to overcome their lack of discipline which has cost them in recent weeks.

The Eagles conceded four goals from 50-metre penalties in their 37-point loss to Carlton in round seven.

The 2007 All-Australian ruckman said the Eagles needed to stay focused and disciplined from first bounce to final siren.

“We saw it against Carlton, we had a second quarter that was disgraceful, we did it the week before we’ve done it in weeks where we’ve just let ourselves down with fifteen, twenty minutes of football and let sides kick four, five six or eight goals,” he said.

Cox said that given the nature of modern day football, sides can’t over come blowouts like they may have in the past.

“This competition it’s too hard to come back. We’ve come back at times, but just haven’t been good enough to get over the line.”

WOOSHA NOT FAZED BY NEW SURROUNDS

Thursday, May 15th, 2008 at 8:37 am

BY STEPHEN BAKER

WEST Coast Eagles coach, John Worsfold, says he isn’t concerned with the fact that his side will attempt to break a five game losing streak on a ground they haven’t played a home and away game on in sixteen years.

The Eagles last traveled to the Gold Coast in 1992 to play the former Brisbane Bears.

The 2006 Premiership coach said that he expected his side to be at their best despite the unfamiliar surroundings.

“It really makes no difference to the way the ball bounces, or the way that you attack the contest,” he said.

“We play our pre-season games in Alice Springs and all around the place and there’s no reason you expect your players to perform any differently.”

A paltry crowd of less than 10,000 people are expected to attend the game.

He is expected to be available for the Eagles’ round eight game against his former club, North Melbourne next Saturday evening.

Close Attention Part of the Game: Eade

Thursday, May 1st, 2008 at 2:23 pm

BY FRANK IENCO

WESTERN Bulldogs coach Rodney Eade says paying close attention on opposition players is not a new part of the game.

Eade was responding to criticism from the West Coast Eagles, who claim midfielder Daniel Kerr was aggravated by the scrutiny from his opponents before the headbutt on Scott West which earnt him a three week suspension.

“It (the criticism) was … a bit surprising, but anyway, that’s a part of the game” Eade said.

“I think it’s more about highlighting the protection of their own players and I think all coaches do it. We did it last year with Scott West.”

Eade said forwards have had to put up with close-checking during matches “for a long time”.

“They’ve had defenders sitting on them the whole time, so I don’t think it’s anything new,” he said.

WEST Coast ruckman Dean Cox remains a small possibilty of taking the field for Saturday’s night’s clash against the Sydney Swans at ANZ Stadium.

Eagles coach John Worsfold says Cox is still confident of playing despite his foot injury.

But Worsfold says the ruckman will have to be much more than a 50-50 chance of playing to make the flight across.

LE CRAS OUT INDEFINITELY

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008 at 2:37 pm

BY BRAD KLIBANSKY

WEST Coast Eagles forward Mark Le Cras has been ruled out action indefinitely after it was revealed he is suffering a groin injury.

Coach John Worsfold revealed on Wednesday that LeCras had a pubic bone stress injury but denied it was the same debilitating groin injury that Chris Judd carried through the second half of last season.

“The update is he has got a pubic bone stress injury, which at this stage we would expect will keep him out for a few weeks, but we can’t put an exact timeline on how long he will be out for,” Worsfold said.

“We just have to manage that. We spotted the injury early and a layoff period will hopefully let it heal itself. It might be three (weeks on the sidelines), it might be five. It’s not OP (osteitis pubis). “

Worsfold said youngsters Chris Masten, Jamie McNamara and Brad Ebert were just some of the names who could replace Le Cras.

EAGLES PAYING FOR GILLARD REPORT

Friday, March 14th, 2008 at 2:48 pm

BY STEVE BAKER

WEST Coast Eagles chairman, Mark Barnaba has admitted that his club is funding the cost of the Gillard Report.

Speaking on Melbourne radio station 1116 SEN, Barnaba revealed that the club made an offer to the AFL to fund the report, which the League has accepted.

Barnaba rejected suggestions that the offer of payment compromised the independance of Justice Gillard’s report.

“Given that the offer was only made after report was concluded, it doesn’t change the result,” he said.

Barnaba said the Eagles made the offer to the League feeling that it was unfair for other teams to share the bill into the inquiry.

“I don’t see why the other fifteen clubs should be penalised - because it’s distributions that they would otherwise have - for a report that was about the West Coast Eagles.”

Barnaba was unsure what the cost of the inquiry would run to.

“I don’t know yet, but I would expect that it would be largely in line with the report that we undertook, which was around $100,000 to $150,000, and it’s no small amount.”

FootyHeads makes no suggestion that Barnaba, the AFL or Justice Gillard have acted inappropriately.

EAGLES IN THE CLEAR

Friday, March 14th, 2008 at 2:20 pm

BY STEVE BAKER

THE West Coast Eagles have no case to answer for bringing the game into disrepute according the Gillard Report, which was accepted by the AFL today.

Speaking to the media this afternoon, Commission chairman, Mike Fitzpatrick, confirmed that Justice Gillard’s report found that the club had no case to answer under rule 1.6.

Fitzpatrick said that the Eagles had demonstrated to Justice Gillard that the culture of the club had changed considerably and accordingly, the club deserved to be congratulated.

While finding that the Eagles hadn’t brought the game into disrepute, Justice Gillard’s report acknowledged the club’s chequered past.

His report included a number of recommendations including the establishment of an independant body to oversee player disciplinary hearings  and steep increases in fines and suspensions handed out for bad off-field behaviour.

Fitzpatrick also confirmed that the report would not be made public.

Skippers Predict Another Big Season For Cats

Thursday, March 13th, 2008 at 1:45 pm

BY FRANK IENCO

The annual poll of AFL captains has found Geelong the overwhelming favourite to play in this Grand Final, while it will be St. Kilda who will join them there.

Captains were asked which rival club would meet them in this year’s decider, with 14 of 15 club captains nominating the Cats to reach their second successive Grand Final.

Only St. Kilda, with two votes, was the other side nominated.

All 15 rival captains said the Cats would reach the finals, with St. Kilda and Hawthorn (14 each) and Port Adelaide and West Coast (12 each) next best.

Of last year’s other preliminary finalists, only one club captain thought the Kangaroos would return to the top eight, while only six thought Collingwood would finish in the top half of the table.

Despite the acquisition of Chris Judd, no rival captain could find a spot for Carlton in their top eight. Richmond and Melbourne also missed out on votes.

In the individual honours, Geelong’s Gary Ablett Jnr was favourite to win the Brownlow Medal, with Judd second. Brisbane’s Jonathon Brown was tipped to win the Coleman Medal, while another Carlton recruit, Matthew Kreuzer, was favoured to win the Rising Star Award.
