BOMBERS TO WALK IN HARMONY
BY ALANA LAKELAND
THE Essendon Football Club and the Department of Immigration and Citizenship will host the second annual Walk in Harmony to bring together Melbourne’s multicultural communities.
The walk, which attracted 1000 people last year, will set off from the Flemington Community Centre this Sunday and follow the bike path to Telstra Dome for Essendon’s clash with Port Adelaide.
Essendon general manager of community and media Simon Matthews is encouraging Essendon supporters to join the walk and hopes to surpass last year’s participation numbers.
“This has the capacity to grow into a really important event and it again highlights the role football can play in promoting social cohesion,” Matthews said.
“It is something our playing group are very supportive of, in particular Bachar Houli and Andrew Welsh who have done a significant amount of work in the Flemington multicultural community over the past two years,” Matthews said.
The first 2000 participants on the day will receive a free Walk in Harmony t-shirt, entry to the game and return public transport.
