SOUTH Melbourne and Sydney Swans legend, Ricky Quade will end his formal association with the club this year.

A report in today’s Herald Sun says that Quade, a former captain and coach will not seek re-election to the club’s board.

Quade is the last official link between South Melbourne and the Sydney Swans, playing 164 games between 1970 and 1981. He also coached the club in its tumultuous transition period between 1982 and 1984 when South became Sydney.

Current Swans chairman, Richard Colless, paid tribute to Quade last night.

“Without him, we would not exist,” he said.

“The term ‘legend’ is bandied about very freely, but there is no question that in the extraordinary history of our club Rick is one of the true legends.”

Quade said that he felt it was time to inject new blood onto the Swans’ board.

“It has been a great honour to have been involved with a club that has such a fantastic culture,” he said.

“I’m proud when people talk of the top teams in Australian sport and the Swans are invariably mentioned right up the top of the list.”
