Injuries Force McDonald to Retire
BY FRANK IENCO
Brisbane Lions Premiership ruckman Beau McDonald has retired with immediate effect.
Lions’ coach Leigh Matthews has confirmed the injuries that plagued the 28-year-old’s career had finally caught up with him.
“His body just won’t do it, he hasn’t even been able to do summer training.” Matthews said. “His body is just shot.”
“He has decided that rather than beating his head against the wall to get ready to play, it was time to give it up.”
McDonald played in the Lions’ Grand Final triumphs of 2001 and 2002, but dislocated his shoulder in the ‘02 decider. After finally returning in 2006, he tore his hamstring during the mid-season break, before suffering a hip injury last season.
He played eight games last season to finish his career tally on 91 senior matches.
With McDonald now on the long term injury list and a rookie-listed player able to take his place, Matthews hinted that 19-year-old ruckman Joel Tippett will make his debut in the Lions’ NAB Cup match against Essendon on Saturday night.
